Specialists' Meetings

American Helicopter Society International – The Vertical Flight Technical Society
Presents
The Systems Engineering Specialists’ Meeting
Sponsored by the AHS Empire State Chapter
September 21-22, 2011
Ithaca, NY

The Empire State Chapter in conjunction with the Systems Engineering Technical Committee of the American Helicopter Society International is sponsoring a Technical Specialists’ Meeting covering Systems Engineering Opportunities and Challenges within the Rotorcraft Industry. The purpose of the meeting is to provide a forum for discussion of new SE processes, methods and tools to improve the efficiency of rotorcraft development.

The ever-increasing complexity of helicopter development programs requires robust Systems Engineering (SE) process methods and tools to facilitate an efficient integration of diverse products, process and people. Developing highly complex helicopter products requires collaboration from diverse technical disciplines (i.e. mechanical, electrical, software) as well as inputs from various non-engineering stakeholders (i.e. manufacturing operations and logistics). A typical helicopter design effort may be distributed among various design teams including, for example, the engine design team (concentrating on the propulsion system), the aerodynamics team (working on flight surfaces), the subsystems engineering team (working on the landing gear), and other specialists. In addition, there are often conflicting requirements for example open systems architecture and information assurance. To address this increased product and organizational process complexity while delivering better value to our customers, enhanced SE processes and tools must be utilized throughout the Project Life Cycle (PLC).

Development and implementation of enhanced SE processes is required to effectively integrate diverse project activities, processes, methods, tools and people throughout the PLC.

Use of Model Based SE tools and other digital design collaboration tools linking requirements development, management, implementation, verification and Validation as well as organizational processes across the OEM, suppliers, partners, and customer/product user communities have the potential to address the Emerging Complexity in Rotorcraft Systems while dramatically decreasing the overall helicopter life cycle cost.

Stephen Welby, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Systems Engineering, will be the Keynote Speaker. The host hotel is the Owego Treadway Inn. Room blocks are also available at the Holiday Inn Express and the Hampton Inn.

The Rotorcraft Propulsion Specialists’ Meeting
Sponsored by the AHS Southeast Region Hampton Roads Chapter
October 24-27, 2011
Crowne Plaza Williamsburg at Fort Magruder Inn
Williamsburg, VA

The AHS Southeast Region, the Hampton Roads Chapter of AHS International and the US Army Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM), Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD) are sponsoring an International Specialists’ Meeting on Rotorcraft Propulsion, October 24-27, 2011.

The theme of the conference is "Propulsion Technologies: Innovation Driving Future Joint Rotorcraft Capabilities." The meeting will consist of unclassified, unrestricted meetings held at the Crowne Plaza Williamsburg at Fort Magruder Inn, Williamsburg, Virginia. The meeting will cover present research and development goals and accomplishments as well as futuristic ideas in rotorcraft propulsion for both manned and unmanned systems.

Technical sessions are as follows: Session I – Propulsion Strategic Planning (Government Perspective); Session 2 – Propulsion System Level Demo (Industry Perspective); Session 3 – Engine Technologies; Session 4 – Drives Systems; and Session 5 – Condition Based Maintenance. Theme-related military and industry exhibits of new hardware and equipment will also be displayed. If interested in presenting in any of the technical sessions, contact the Assistant Technical Chairman.

A golf tournament will kick off the conference, beginning at noon on October 24, followed by an Early Bird Social. The technical sessions will be all day October 25 and 26, and a half day on October 27.

The conference will be held at the Crowne Plaza Williamsburg at Fort Magruder Inn, Williamsburg, Virginia. Find out more or to register, go to the AHS Hampton Roads Chapter's website!

Presents
The Fifth International Helicopter Safety Symposium

November 8 – 9, 2011
Worthington Renaissance Hotel
Fort Worth, TX, USA

Don't miss your chance to hear about the latest progress by the International Helicopter Safety Team (IHST)! The special hotel rates expire on October 7 and the hotel will release the block of rooms reserved for the conference. The early bird registration rates also end on October 7.

The International Helicopter Safety Team, for which AHS is the Secretariat, is planning to hold the Fifth International Helicopter Safety Symposium, November 8 – 9, 2011, at the Worthington Renaissance Hotel, Fort Worth, TX, USA. This is the continuation of a global effort that was launched in 2005, with the goal to reduce worldwide helicopter accident rates by 80 percent by 2016. A key challenge in achieving that goal is addressing the human factors in helicopter safety and fostering a culture in which individual members of the international helicopter community (both organizations and people) take personal responsibility for preventing accidents and enhancing safety. Not surprisingly, the theme of this important conference is “Human Factors: Our Collective Challenge –Our Individual Responsibility.” The event is a gathering of helicopter operators, manufacturers, service providers, trade associations, academia, government regulators, pilots, mechanics, instructors and other industry participants around the globe who are dedicated to finding ways to drive down the helicopter accident rate. During this important two-day meeting attendees will participate in a wide range of activities, including:

  • Presentations by the U.S. FAA (FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt will provide the Keynote Address on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at 11:40 a.m.), the US National Transportation Safety Board (Vice Chairman Robert Sumwalt will provide his presentation on the “Top Ten Recommendations on Human Factors in Helicopter Accidents” on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 8:00 a.m.), the European Aviation Safety Agency, and ICAO.
  • Panel discussions by IHST Regional Partners including representatives from India, the Gulf Cooperative Council, Japan, Brazil, Russia, Canada, and Australia, Small Helicopter Operators, Maintenance, New Technologies/Next Generation Helicopter Infrastructure, Training, Corporate Safety Culture, and the IHST Executive Committee
  • Presentations by exhibitors/equipment manufacturers on their products that may be most beneficial to operators’ individual safety initiatives.

We encourage anyone with an interest in safety to attend this important meeting. To register, look at a preliminary agenda, find out about exhibiting or sponsoring or to make a hotel reservation please visit www.ihst.org. The hotel has room rates of $189.00 with government room rates offered at $138.00 (which will go fast!). The hotel can be reached by calling 1-800-266-9432 and make sure to mention the International Helicopter Safety Symposium when making your reservations. We hope to see you in Fort Worth at this pivotal conference.
