FlightSafety Integrates S-92 Simulator

Experts from the FlightSafety Int'l West Palm Beach Learning Center have begun operational reviews of the S-92 helicopter simulator undergoing hardware-software integration at the company's Tulsa, Oklahoma manufacturing facility. The Sikorsky S-92 simulator is expected to train the first customer crews at West Palm Beach, Florida in the second quarter of 2004.

The advanced S-92 Level D simulator will meet FAR/JAR standards for training and checking all the requirements of the ATP Practical Test Standard. It has a high-fidelity cockpit with five multi-function displays compatible with unmodified Night Vision Goggles (The basic Rockwell-Collins S-92 cockpit has four displays with provisions for an optional fifth display.). The instructor's station is also NVG-compatible.

A five-channel FSI VITAL-9 visual system gives the S-92 crew realistic out-the-window views and simulated weather radar imagery. The weather radar simulation provides a beacon mode for offshore navigation scenarios. An additional channel will be added to simulate FLIR imagery when required. The expanded FSI worldwide terrain base now includes Fort Rucker, Alabama and has sufficient details for students to fly realistic nap-of-the-earth training scenarios.

The S-92 simulator has a state-of-the-art electric motion base six degrees of freedom, and three degrees secondary vibration and control loading.

The FSI West Palm Beach Learning Center was expanded two years ago to accommodate S-70 Black Hawk and S-92 training requirements, and has two additional bays for future simulators.
