Chinook in AfghanistanThe Southeast Region and the Hampton Roads Chapter of AHS International are sponsoring a conference on Helicopter Military Operations Technology, October 26–27, 2016. Vertical Lift Technology: Enabling the Future Soldier Today is the theme. The conference will consist of 1½ days of unclassified, unrestricted presentations held at the Newport News Marriott at City Center, Newport News, Virginia USA. HELMOT XVII will consider the full spectrum of global operations, and look at Warfighter capabilities needed to keep our edge.

Topics will focus on how the acquisition of vertical lift technology impacts our current operational environment around the world, and the flexibility of future planning for the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security manned rotorcraft and unmanned aerial systems. The sessions will include a review of how we will transition from our current force to next generation vertical lift platforms.

Theme-related military and industry exhibits of new hardware and equipment will be displayed.

U.S. Army Aviation Development Classified Session Added Tuesday, October 25th

The U.S. Army Aviation Development Directorate (ADD) will hold an AAS IPT's Classified Future Battlefield Brief (CFBB) on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at the Jacobs Conference Center Fort Eustis, Virginia.  For registration details, please contact Timothy Rouse.

Call for Presentations

The AHS Hampton Roads chapters is looking for government and industry to present at the 17th HELMOT meeting where the theme will be Vertical Lift Technology: Enabling the Future Soldier Today.  Mike Hirschberg, AHS Technical Director, will present The Future of Vertical Flight and discuss the role of AHS in the S&T budget. There will be three sessions with 5 to 7 briefs in each session covering the following topics:

  • Helicopter Operational Lessons Learned: briefings from both contractors and military personnel covering the utility of technology and how it is used in the field.
  • Requirements for Improving the Fleet: briefings from our acquisition and user communities on how we intend to address the future threats and the future environment for rotorcraft operations.
  • Future Capabilities for Military Rotorcraft: updates and briefings from the Army Avation S&T community and industry on the transformational technologies and capabilities that will enable the future warfighter.

The sessions will take place all day October 26 and a half day on October 27. If you are interested in speaking please contact

Presentation requirements and deadlines:

  • No paper requirement
  • Abstract idea to organizers by Friday, September 16
  • Final presenters will be notified on or about September 23
  • Presentations will be due October 18

Cancellation Fee

Cancellations must be in writing. There will be a $25 cancellation fee on all credit card payments. No cancellation refunds after October 19, 2016.

Breakfast and refreshment breaks are included in the registration for general and student attendees, but are “pay as you go” for DOD government employee attendees. All attendees are encouraged to select their favorite local restaurant for lunch in downtown Newport News.
